PRESS RELEASE (06.05.2000)
NEW POLITICAL PARTY FOR IMMIGRANTS AND OTHER GROUPS
UNDER PRESSURE: THE MINORITY PARTY. PRESS CONFERENCE IN AARHUS.
On Denmarks constitution day, the fifth of
june, initiator and deputy-foreman of The Minority Party, Souhail
Ibrahim (spokesperson for IDFAD, Association of Immigrants in Denmark
for Anti-discrimination), with foreman, Rune Engelbreth Larsen (editor
of "Faklen" (The Torch)) and board member Leyla Tamer, will
present the background for, as well as the main political views of the
new party.
The Minority Party is a humanist party. We wish to
support the various minorities and ostracised sections of society in
mutual understanding, freedom of diversity, and a joint cultural
showdown, from immigrants and refugees, to the elderly and sick, the
poor and the disenfranchised.
In Denmark, immigrants in particular suffer from smear campaigns and
inequality the international media has already noted the hypocrisy
of the Danish government by pointing out that the chauvinistic and
discriminatory policy towards immigrants and foreigners of Prime
Minister, Nyrup Rasmussen, equals anything that has been suggested by
the Freedom Party of Jrg Haider in Austria. The Social Democrats and
the Danish political right have become buffers to the extreme right-wing
Danish Peoples Party. Only thus, have these parties managed to limit the
steady growth among nationalist forces. On the other hand the Danish
left-wing parties have failed to stress the necessity of an alliance
among the Danish minorities, who must endure ever increasing pressure.
Danish citizens with non-Danish ethnic backgrounds, are extremely poorly
represented among the political parties. Consequently, these people
constitute as few as 7 of the approximately 600 candidates for the
Danish Parliament The Minority Party wishes to double this number.
The Minority Party will fight for cultural diversity, social justice and
equal rights for all within the borders of Denmark.
A detailed political programme will be presented in Danish at the press
conference.
