PRESS RELEASE (06.12.2000)

A new political party is ready to take part in Danish parliamentary election. The Minority Party will be a platform for all minorities who are protesting against the accelerating discrimination and xenophobia in Denmark. Representatives from The Minority Party will arrive at The Ministry of Interior on Friday the 14th of June at 2 pm ("Indenrigs- og Sundhedsministeriet", Slotholmsgade 10, Copenhagen)

The Minority Party wishes to thank politicians and media all over the world for their relentless critique and denunciation of Danish xenophobic policies. This external focus has been a crucial help for our cause. We believe that ethnic minorities will benefit from this observant eye from outside on the discriminatory policies and hateful rhetoric of the Danish government and most of the political establishment in and out of Parliament.

We believe that a counter offensive is necessary to fight the racist tendencies and unequal treatment of minorities. It must be achieved through a consistent anti-discrimination struggle. We do not for one moment trust the political argument that intolerance and far right march can be stopped by tightening asylum and family reunion laws or giving credentials to racist view points. Our motto is "Equal rights, equal conditions and equal opportunities for all".

Ethnicity, religion, culture and colour should never be a hindrance in the battle for equality. Minority Party will tirelessly work for cultural, religious and ethnic diversity, social justice and equality under the law for all. We will bring together those who are on the margins of the society and wish to be part of the mainstream. A common cause between ethnic minorities and those among the majority who are disadvantaged, poor and powerless.

SPOKESPERSON FOR ETHNIC EQUALITY, BASHY QURAISHY

Among those who took the initiative to establish The Minority Party is Bashy Quraishy who has been actively involved in organising ethnic minorities in Denmark and EU, is Vice Chairman for Danish Federation of Ethnic Minorities and President of ENAR - European Network Against Racism - Brussels.

One of the tasks of the party will be to inform the international media how Danish politicians accept and cover naked discrimination and indulge in populist propaganda against ethnic and religious minorities to gain votes. We will expose the double standards and hypocrisy practiced by most of the political establishment to present Denmark as a so-called humanistic society.

We hope that a new political party based on humanism will contribute to press the existing parties to stop all direct and indirect cooperation with nationalist forces and extreme far right movements as well as illuminate discrimination. This is one of the main reasons, we have established Minority Party.

THE MINORITY PARTY FIGHTS AGAINST THE UNDEMOCRATIC DANISH PROCEDURE TO ATTAIN ELIGIBILITY TO PARTICIPATE IN PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS!

It should be noted that in Denmark it is extremely difficult for a new political party even to attain eligibility to participate in parliamentary elections! Expenses for this procedure amount to approximately 200.000 Dkr. (roughly 20.000), not to mention the 10.000 or so man hours involved in collecting 20.000-60.000 signatures from voters who sign a paper stating that they approve of the right of the new political party to participate in the election.

Not only must the voters fill out a prescribed form, they are also required to state their address and social security number, even though the authorities in all other matters, warn people against disclosing such sensitive information to anyone. The government has thereby made it even more difficult for new political parties to challenge the establishment, since most people for obvious reasons refuse to divulge their social security number or any other personal information. The whole procedure is overly bureaucratic, absolutely undemocratic and utterly kafkaesque, and in our view, the sole purpose of which is to ensure that only the established political parties can run for election.

However, despite this hindrance and against all odds, The Minority Party has succeeded in collecting the required number of signatures and consequently, on Friday the 14th of June shall formally apply for the right to run for parliament at the next general election.

Representatives from The Minority Party will arrive at The Ministry of Interior on Friday the 14th of June at 2 pm ("Indenrigs- og Sundhedsministeriet", Slotholmsgade 10, Copenhagen).
